What is Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)?
Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is an IP-based application layer protocol used for managing and monitoring network-connected devices. SNMP has become the default choice for network management due to its open, non-proprietary nature that provides insight into performance and overall network health.
SNMP facilitates the exchange of management information between network devices (agents) and a central management system (SNMP manager). It enables network managers to remotely operate and gather information on network devices such as routers, servers, switches, or printers. SNMP also allows administrators to manage network devices and allocate interfaces and ports to ensure consistent uptime and high bandwidth network operations.
